* Family Interaction: the Expressway to Permanency-Facilitating Successful Visitation
12 March 2010
The Fort Bend County Court Team for Maltreated Infants and Toddlers in collaboration with Infant Toddler Court of Harris County present a training on Family Interaction: the Expressway to Permanency-Facilitating Successful Visitation by Norma M. Ginther MSW, LISW. The training will be held March 12, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview Drive, Richmond, TX 77469. RSVP is required for lunch and attendance: Sbogard@zerotothree.org or 281-344-5142 by March 8, 2010. CLEs and CEUs pending. This training is supported by a grant from the Children’s Justice Act grant.

Workshop Synopsis
This workshop is designed to take a fresh look at family visitation during placement and out-of-home care.  The research currently shows that the greatest success of return home is based on frequent, well planned, family interaction/visitation, not always the completion of a case plan.  Due to physical abuse, neglect, and sexual abuse, the attachment between birth parents and children is most often maladaptive.  The change that can be facilitated by considering visitation/family interaction as a planned, therapeutic intervention is one of the most important ways to build safety for the children when they return home.  This workshop will explore all the reasons that we have not made any drastic changes in family visits, even though the research says so; the responsibilities of all parties during visitation; and developing plans that are clear and accurate to enhance the child’s return home.

The Children’s Commission supports efforts to improve the quality of legal representation in CPS cases. Scholarships are available for the conference and pre-conference offerings. The pre-conference trainings may include:

  1. Red Book Training (preparation training for child welfare law certification); or
  2. Trial Skills Course

Scholarships are available only to Texas attorneys who:

To apply, each attorney must visit the NACC conference link, http://www.naccchildlaw.org/?page=National_Conference or the Texas scholarship page, http://www.naccchildlaw.org/?page=TexasScholarship beginning March 1st.  The application requests information regarding the type of representation the attorney provides, as well as the primary judge before whom the attorney appears.  After the application is completed, the NACC will provide qualifying attorneys with a promotion code to use when registration opens later in 2010.  Qualifying attorneys will also receive a reminder email upon opening of conference registration.
Scholarships do not include funding for travel and lodging.
